It’s not a surprise to me that Jesus chose to surround himself with a small group of friends. The disciples were His close companions in life. He walked and talked with them, shared laughter, tears, meals and a ministry. He shared trust and developed intimacy within this small group.
I have served in a number of capacities in ministry over the years from speaking to large groups, radio, event coordinator and small group leader. Yet, to me, the most rewarding and fulfilling ministry remains leading a small group of eight to 12 women through life-change and the development of a life that Christ developed in the Apostles.
As Women’s Ministry Leaders we have an opportunity to profoundly impact a woman’s life and many times that comes through table discussion. In order to build an effective ministry, and develop future study leaders, I have discovered four keys to create effective table discussion.
Key One: Create a safe environment. At the beginning of every study I introduce what I’ve named the “Small Group Agreement.” This is an actual document I pass out to each member. It establishes an understanding among the group that we are a safe group of believers and what is said among us, stays only with us. Key Two: Be authentic. As a small group leader you set the example. When a leader can share with authenticity the good, bad and even the ugly within the group and explain how God has shaped you through the adversity then individuals are comfortable to also be authentic. Real healing, hope and change occurs when we allow our group to bring into the light their real struggles..
Key Three: Guide the conversation. This allows all of the group members to participate. For example:
Also use redirecting questions to return to topic or to allow another member to join the conversation. Questions such as:
Key Four: Celebrate every triumph. Acknowledging even tiny steps in life-change will encourage your group members to stay the course. Words such as:
Jesus worked with 12 men who went on to spread the gospel of hope and healing to the world. It all starts with the power of twelve.
